Perhaps I am both things, and I cannot untangle myself... within the bones, the flesh, and in the way of thinking.
The Jester is a fusion of theater and dance that sketches corporeal and spiritual worlds, a journey into the mind of a capricious man who embraces oppression and overturns its perspective.
Three monologues mark a transformation.
"The Peasant Beggar" is the first original text. Set in medieval times, it tells the story of a man who tries to improve his living conditions, leaving the safety of his humble existence in the hope of change. However, victim of a stringent social marginalization, he is destined to succumb.
The storyteller of this tale is a brash, captivating jester, confident in his charisma, exploiting the precariousness of the downtrodden to satisfy an audience craving for suffering.
But within the jester's soul, a conflict arises.
Compassion and empathy clash with the cruelty of discrimination.
Despite the well-sewn mask on his face, the humanity of his soul overwhelms his mind and forces him to confront an uncomfortable reality.
To the overwhelming music of Arvo Pärt's "Te Deum," the Jester faces an internal struggle of confusion, resistance, and suffering that floods through his body and movement, where the jester's mask and the humanity of the peasant blur.
The stream of consciousness reaches a timeless dimension in the second monologue, "The Peasant Beneath the Cross," freely inspired by Dario Fo's "Mistero Buffo" and a poem by Claudia Chiti.
Through the eyes of the jester, embodying the peasant, a spiritual dimension takes shape, an inner dialogue with Christ on the cross that finally reveals the perspective of the oppressed.
Finally, with John Tavener's music and the last original text of the creation, "In the Body or in the Mind," the jester becomes an expression of awareness, humanity, and a genuine need for artistic expression.”
