Synopsis
Finger food, literally food to eat with your hands, is a type of course or buffet made up of small single portions that are mostly eaten standing up.
Finger food table is like a remote and impermanent island; it is no longer that safe harbor to get anchored to for the entire duration of the meal. Diners, in turn, become ships navigating around it almost aimlessly, with a fast and distracted pace, as stopping and staying is an act of responsibility and great courage.
As Plutarch wrote: "We do not invite each other to simply eat and drink, but to eat and drink together." Indeed, getting together with others awakens the senses, stimulates the intellect and arouses interest. Following this entirely modern wave, are we perhaps building a world where individuality increasingly takes center stage, even in convivial settings such as meals?
The table, in the process of creation, is elevated to a "place of the soul": sitting down, perhaps, instead of orbiting around it, remains the only way to truly find oneself, to understand and know the other rather than fear them.
“There is nothing that cannot be faced around a laden table”.
